50 Affordable Home Updates

Happy Monday!!! A different type of post today – and we are talking interiors. To fill you in, we bought our first home about 12 years ago. At the time we were newlyweds living in Bristol and didn’t have much in our savings. So ,we took a 100% mortgage which was not ideal but we were desperate to get onto the property ladder. It was a starter home – not in the best area – but it was what we could afford. Because we didn’t have a budget for much, we largely furnished the house for free (gumtree was my best friend!!). A few years later we found ourselves having to move to London for work and hoped to buy a property in London after a few years. Well, that didn’t happen. The cost of buying a property in London was ridiculous and we simply couldn’t justify going into so much debt just to be in London (much as I love London).

We moved to Surrey  in July 2017  after about a year searching and are now in the process of renovating and furnishing our home. Our old stuff looked a bit out of place in the new space – we had all sorts of clashing styles and things that were now very old . We have therefore decided to treat ourselves to some nicer things now that we have a bit more money, our daughter is past the stage of destroying stuff and we know what kind of style we wanted. We enjoy mixing a little bit of the old  with the new – mainly combining mid century modern and contemporary Scandinavian pieces.

As you may have guessed from previous posts or my instastories, I am a bargain hunter. I do my best to invest in the right places, otherwise, I’m happy to buy second hand, or shop on the high street (usually during the sales). My favourite stores include H&M Home, Ikea, ASOS, Matalan, Wayfair, Argos, Oliver Bonas, Anthropologie,  Sainsbury’s Home, BHS (especially for lighting) and Homesense. For unique finds I love Not On The High Street and Etsy.

As I continue to furnish our home I discovered some excellent yet affordable items, that if styled the right way will make your house a home. It’s interesting how a nice cushion or plant or throw can transform a room.  From terazzo (yes I know – it’s made a comeback!!) to artisan textures, black accents and mixed metals, I have incorporated some of the 2018 interiors trends in my home.  Do comment below on what appeals to you, your style,  what you’ve recently purchased or are currently loving for your home.
